Explanation - POW - September 6, 1953
While compiling this page the Korean War Educator asked Korean War POW experts these questions:
"Is there something significant about the date September 6, 1953 that would make the government
list so many POW's as "died as prisoner of war on September 6, 1953"? Rather than the actual date
that they died, is that just an arbitrary date the government picked to declare a prisoner dead?
I'm working on a list of deceased Korean War veterans from July 28, 1953 to December 31, 1953. I've
come across that September 6 date over and over again." The following answer came from John
Zimmerlee, Executive Director of the Korean & Cold War POW/MIA Network:
"Though the Armistice ended the war on July 27, 1953, our last ex-POWs were returned on September
6, 1953. At that point many whom were still missing were “Presumed Dead”. Months later,
as the “unaccounted-for” list settled down, notes were taken on the last known alive dates .
. . and “Presumed Dead” dates were established one year following.
Many family members are confused . . . and think there is some evidence of actual death on
these “Presumed Dead” dates. Even worse, I have compelling evidence on 192 KIA cases and 843
MIA cases that our government knew they were actually POWs . . . and never informed the families.
