Deaths in 1953
After the Cease Fire

[KWE Note: The following veterans died in the year 1953 after the cease fire (without peace treaty) on July 27, 1953.  The Korean War Educator feels that it is important that the public realizes how dangerous Korea was even after there were no more open hostilities.  The hostility and danger was still there, and Americans were still dying.  There are two tables: one for those who died in 1953 in Korea and another for those who died in 1953 while serving as veterans elsewhere around the world.  The lists were compiled by Lynnita Brown of the KWE using a 1999 print-out of "Korean Conflict Non-Battle Deaths 1950-57" and Department of Defense state-by-state casualty data found online.  Explanation for "Other Causes" of death is not known.  Almost all veterans whose hometown or home state is not listed by the government shows cause of death as "other".  Casualty details came from the American Battle Monuments Commission website at www.abmc.gov.  To add a name missing from this list, contact Lynnita.]

Explanation - POW - September 6, 1953

While compiling this page the Korean War Educator asked Korean War POW experts these questions: "Is there something significant about the date September 6, 1953 that would make the government list so many POW's as "died as prisoner of war on September 6, 1953"? Rather than the actual date that they died, is that just an arbitrary date the government picked to declare a prisoner dead? I'm working on a list of deceased Korean War veterans from July 28, 1953 to December 31, 1953. I've come across that September 6 date over and over again."  The following answer came from John Zimmerlee, Executive Director of the Korean & Cold War POW/MIA Network:

"Though the Armistice ended the war on July 27, 1953, our last ex-POWs were returned on September 6, 1953. At that point many whom were still missing were “Presumed Dead”.  Months later, as the “unaccounted-for” list settled down, notes were taken on the last known alive dates . . . and “Presumed Dead” dates were established one year following.

Many family members are confused . . . and think there is some evidence of actual death on these “Presumed Dead” dates. Even worse, I have compelling evidence on 192 KIA cases and 843 MIA cases that our government knew they were actually POWs . . . and never informed the families. Of those 1,035 cases, I have family contacts for just 240 of them. Together, we can . . . and will get answers!"
