Membership Reports

All sorts of variations on the number of active members of the Korean War Veterans Association have been reported in President's Messages, news releases, chapter newsletters, and the like.  Is the true and current membership figure 25,000, as reported in a news release about national charter efforts?  Is it 18,000, as reported in the President's Message (next to the fraudulent photograph of the KWVA "headquarters") in the May-June 2002 issue of The Graybeards?  The answer lies in the annual Membership Report, compiled by KWVA secretary Nancy Monson, P.O. Box 10806, Arlington, VA 22210.  Reports are available from 1998-2003, but Year 2000 is not available to the Korean War Educator as yet.  The reports are posted here, from most recent to oldest.

New Growth:
Chapter development has slowed considerably.  Anyone who is itnerested in the formation of a chapter n their area should contact Jack Edwards, who will provide complete information to accomplish this.

Delinquent:
A dues reminder was mailed to those whose dues were due January through March, 2002 (approximately 3,125--mailed 4/07/02).

Of those, approximately 1,250 did not renew; however, these are still dribbling in.  Those who did not respond prior to the mailing of the May-June issue of The Graybeards were removed from the membership roles [sic].

Recruiting:
In the near future, we will initiate an offer to reinstate those members we have lost during the years 2001 and 2002.  This usually results in a good response.  Many simply forget to pay their dues.

New Growth:
Enough cannot be said about the effect that development of new chapters plays on membership growth.  Not only do they initially increase our membership, but they continue to grow after they are chartered.  The Membership Committee and all of those who have served as new Chapter Coordinators deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts.

Membership Report - 2001

Total on active mailing list .....................................   15,574

Those who do not pay annual dues:

    Life Members (active) ..........................................    6,174

       (Includes all classes of members)

    Associate/Auxiliary Members @ $12.00 annually.        288

    POW's who pay subscription fee @ $6.00 ...........       252

Delinquent:
A dues reminder was mailed to those whose dues were due January through March 2001 (approximately 1,350): mailed 4/02/01

A dues reminder was mailed to those whose dues were due April through June, 2001 (approximately 475); mailed 5/06/01.

After April 26th, we received 1,263 renewal dues payments (mostly due to those two reminders).  (A few, of course, opted for life membership and a few of these were from prior year reinstatements and some paying in advance, but almost all received returned the mail-back coupon with their renewals.)  Those whose dues were due January through March did not respond, were removed May 27, 2001 [sic].

We will be mailing about July 9th, 3,000 offers for members to reinstate who we lost during 1999 and 2000.  Many of those who were lost during those periods were due to their having been "Away," according to the Post Office.  We will now be mailing to them at their summer addresses and we should be able to relocate them.

New Growth:

Again, continued growth has been almost entirely due to the development of so many new chapters.

Mid-February 2000: 4,124 dues reminders were mailed.
Approximately 1,600 responded.  Thus, a loss of
approximately 2,800.

We will soon need to mail a reminder to those who
will come due for the last half of the year.

Membership Renewal Stickers:

With the approval of the provision of stickers to be affixed to members' membership cards, we will be instituting this procedure for the year 2001.  The design of the carrier for the sticker has not been completed.  Tom Gregory and I will define and have it ready for the end of the year.

New Growth:

Chapter development has contributed heavily to keeping the membership numbers up.

Several of the existing chapters have sparked activity where there was little before, i.e., New York and Tennessee.

Request for $10.00 payment for remainder of the year was sent to approximately 650 on July 20th.  (Be advised that many of those whose dues were due during the months of November and December felt that $10.00 was too much to pay for the two months.)

             Total ..........................................................        697

Regular members paying yearly dues ....................      8,684

    Regular members @ $20.00 annually .................     7.809

* The first of June approximately 1,700 members were marked "inactive" on the mailing lists who were delinquent for dues January, February and March of 1998: 402 have reinstated and we are still receiving reinstatements.

Inactive Members Reactivated:

An association's best membership contacts are those who have lapsed membership.  As a result, the Executive Council decided to contact those who have been off our rolls for a while.  We had very good results with offers to reactive 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 inactive members.

    Inactive 1993 members:

           143 reinstated @ $10.00 (3/4 year) .............. = $1,430

    Inactive 1994 members:

           452 reinstated @ $15.00 ............................... = $6,780

    Inactive 1995 members:

           82 reinstated @ $20.00 (1-1/4 years) ........... = $1,640

    Inactive 1996 members:

           95 reinstated @ $20.00 (1-1/4 years) .........  =  $1,900

*Not included in these figures are those who opted for life membership.

At the present time three reminders are being sent to members before they are removed from the rolls.  Each reminder brings good results.

The chapters are doing a tremendous job in recruiting new members.
