Goodwill Gifts
The criteria followed by the KWVA National Board in giving "Goodwill Gifts" is unknown by the general
membership or the Korean War Educator. Presumably, the gifts are first cleared through the Finance Committee and
then brought before the national directors for board approval. However, whether this is standard procedure or
not is unclear.
The KWVA has given money to assist Amerasian children, provide scholarships, purchase memorial wreaths,
support Gold Star Mothers, and more. What scanty information that is available about this practice of
distributing money from the Korean War Veterans Association’s treasury to various entities has been
reconstructed for this website from notations found in the Graybeards magazine. In the May/June 2002 issue, the
board president, Harley Coon, said, "As long as I am President your money will be used for the benefit of KWVA
members" (see p. 21). Some goodwill gifts (such as money given to the Miami Valley Express baseball team in the
Dayton, Ohio area), have caused members to question how certain goodwill gift were "used for the benefit of KWVA
members." Also, it is a fact that some goodwill gifts were given to organizations in which individual national
KWVA directors had direct ties.
The Korean War Educator will publish a complete list of the goodwill gifts and expound on the worthiness of
each of them should such a list be forthcoming from the leadership of the Korean War Veterans Association. Until
then, the following KWE-constructed list of Goodwill Gifts is all that is available for public perusal.
